The actuary diploma

L'institut de science financière et d'assurances

Since 1930, ISFA has trained more than 1200 students who obtained an actuary diploma (post graduate level).  The course program lasts 3 years (3rd year of BSc in SAF and 2 years of MSc in actuarial science and finance.  Successful students must defend a professional thesis in order to become an actuary.

To be accepted in the first year, students must take a national competitive entrance exam after completing studies in a preparatory school for the selective “Grandes Ecoles” in Science.  It is also possible to be accepted after completing a university diploma (usually in the 1st or 2nd year).  The 3rd year is a Co-op program with alternating courses and a company internship.

Job opportunities and entrance in the professional world
There are numerous job opportunities (insurance, finance, reinsurance, consulting, contingency fund planning etc.) and several diplomas prepare for an international career. In April 2007, based on starting salaries after graduation, “Expansion” magazine ranked ISFA number 7.

The entry positions in technical management require 5 to 8 years of experience.  Actuaries can then apply to executive management positions in insurance companies and financial institutions.

An academic program recognized by the Institute of Actuaries

The holders of a diploma in actuarial sciences from Lyon 1 can enroll as an actuarial associate (assistant actuary) and appear on the list of French actuaries recognized by the Institute of Actuaries, which is the only French  professional organization for actuaries.(http://www.institutdesactuaires.com).
